Why Monthly Giving Matters for NZ Charities and Their Donors

· Generosity Team

Monthly giving is the quiet engine of charitable income in New Zealand. Here's why regular donations matter — and how causes can grow them.

One-off donations feel generous and are easy to celebrate. But behind every strong charity in New Zealand is something quieter: monthly giving.

Regular donations are the backbone of sustainable fundraising, and they're easier to grow than most causes realise.

Why monthly giving matters

Predictability. A charity that knows $5,000 will arrive every month can plan, commit to staff, and keep programmes running. A charity waiting on one-off donations is always planning for uncertainty.

Compounding. One supporter giving $20 a month contributes $240 a year — often without ever noticing the impact on their own budget. Ten regular givers are $2,400 a year. A hundred are $24,000. Monthly giving turns small amounts into serious, dependable income.

Retention. Regular givers stay. Once someone has committed to monthly support, they keep giving far longer than one-off donors — and they become your most loyal advocates, sharing your cause and defending it in conversation.

Why donors like it

Monthly giving suits modern budgets. Spreading support across the year is easier than one larger gift, and it gives donors an ongoing connection to a cause they care about. Many donors appreciate the automatic routine — set it up once, know you're making a difference every month.

How to grow monthly giving

  • Offer it everywhere. Put a monthly option alongside every one-off ask. It costs nothing and catches people who'd otherwise give once.
  • Explain the impact. "Your $20 a month keeps our foodbank shelves stocked for two families" turns an amount into a story.
  • Make it easy to change. Donors worry about being locked in. Make it simple to adjust or stop — trust grows retention.
  • Show what their months do. A regular update — "this month your giving paid for..." — keeps monthly donors engaged.
  • Ask existing donors. Your one-off donors are your best prospects. A single, warm invitation to switch to monthly converts a meaningful percentage.

A New Zealand note

For registered charities, donations from supporters may be eligible for donation tax credits — one-third of eligible donations of $5 or more can be claimed back. That makes monthly giving even more attractive for donors who itemise their giving. (Not every fundraiser is a registered charity, so check eligibility before promising it.)

Start small

You don't need a campaign. Add a monthly option to your page, ask your recent donors once, and see what happens. Monthly giving grows slowly and then compounds — the causes that start today are the ones with dependable income a year from now.

One-off giving funds today. Monthly giving funds the future.
