How to Write a Voucher Description That Sells

· Generosity Team

Supporters decide in seconds whether your voucher is worth buying. Here's how to write a description that makes the decision easy.

Your voucher might be the best offer in the catalogue — but if the description doesn't sell it, nobody will ever know.

Most voucher descriptions are dull lists of terms. The ones that sell are short stories. Here's how to write yours.

Lead with the value, not the rules

The first line should make someone want it:

  • "The best flat white in town, on us."
  • "A relaxing hour of massage — your reward for supporting the cause."
  • "A family night out, sorted."

Lead with the experience. Save the terms for later.

Be specific

Vague descriptions don't sell. Specific ones do:

  • "A $50 coffee card" beats "a voucher for our café".
  • "One hour with our senior stylist" beats "a hair service".
  • "Two adults and two kids for a 45-minute session" beats "family entry".

People buy what they can picture.

Make the deal obvious

State the numbers plainly: what they pay, what they get, what goes to the cause. "Pay $50, get a $50 card, and $10 goes to the school." Supporters shouldn't have to do mental maths.

Add a human touch

One line of personality makes a voucher memorable:

  • Who you are ("a family-run café since 1987").
  • What makes you different ("our coffee is roasted three streets away").
  • Why you're supporting the cause ("we've served this school's parents for a decade").

Keep it scannable

Supporters browse on phones. Use short paragraphs and a few bullets for the essentials:

  • What's included.
  • How to redeem.
  • When it's valid.
  • The cause's share.

Avoid the turn-offs

  • Walls of fine print.
  • "T&C's apply" with nothing stated.
  • Jargon and inflated language.
  • Any ambiguity about what the buyer actually gets.

The honest rule

Write the description you'd want to read if you were buying. Clear, specific, warm and honest — that combination sells vouchers, builds trust, and sets up smooth redemptions.

Your voucher may be great. Make sure it reads great too.
