How to Use QR Codes to Boost Fundraiser Sales

· Generosity Team

QR codes are the bridge between the real world and your online fundraiser. Here's how to use them to turn posters, tables and conversations into sales.

Your fundraiser lives online, but your community lives in the real world: at the school gate, the clubrooms, the gala, the supermarket. QR codes are the bridge between the two — and they're one of the cheapest tools in fundraising.

Why QR codes work

Every phone has a camera, and scanning takes seconds. A QR code turns a poster into a shop front and a conversation into a sale. People don't have to remember a URL, type anything, or search for you later — they scan, and they're on your page.

Where to put them

  • Posters and flyers — at the school, clubrooms, the dairy, the local gym.
  • Gala and event tables — a code on the table means people can donate while they queue.
  • Bottles, bags and products — a sticker on every item sold turns each sale into a channel.
  • Team shirts and car windows — mobile advertising that's actually useful.
  • Receipts and newsletters — paper and email both work.
  • Business counters — partner businesses can put your code at the till.

Make your QR code scannable

A few practical rules:

  • Keep it big enough — at least 3cm square for posters.
  • High contrast: dark code on a light background.
  • Leave quiet space around it.
  • Test it with two different phones before printing.
  • Link straight to your page — don't route through a link shortener that adds a step.

Give people a reason to scan

A code alone does nothing; a code with a reason does everything. "Scan to buy a voucher and support the team" tells people exactly what happens. "Scan for a chance to win" adds an extra nudge where appropriate. Pair every code with a clear call to action.

Combine online and offline

QR codes work best when the campaign is already alive online. A poster that sends people to a page with progress, stories and momentum converts far better than one sending them to an empty page. Use your online campaign to make your offline promotion effective — and vice versa.

Track what works

If you put codes in three different places, watch where the traffic comes from. Simple analytics on your page can tell you whether the school gate or the clubrooms is the better spot, so next time you put your codes where they earn their place.

Your community is out there with phones in hand. A well-placed QR code is the easiest way to meet them where they are.
