How to Build Trust With Your Supporters
· Generosity Team
Trust is the currency of fundraising. Here's how to earn it — from the first post to the final thank-you.
People don't give to causes they don't trust. It sounds obvious, but many fundraisers spend all their energy on the ask and none on the trust that makes the ask work.
Trust isn't mysterious. It's built from a few simple, repeatable behaviours.
Be transparent about the money
Tell people exactly where the money is going and how much of it reaches the cause. If there's a platform fee, say so openly — it's a normal part of modern fundraising, and hiding it destroys trust faster than any fee could. Show your goal, show your progress, and explain how the funds will be used.
Show real people and real proof
Use photos, names and updates. A fundraiser backed by visible, named organisers feels legitimate; an anonymous page with no story feels risky. When people can see who's behind the cause, they give more freely.
Communicate honestly
If the campaign is struggling, say so. If costs are higher than expected, explain. Supporters are remarkably understanding when they're kept in the loop — and remarkably unforgiving when they feel misled. Never inflate progress or claim impact that hasn't happened.
Follow through on promises
If you said the money goes to new kit, the team wears new kit. If you promised a thank-you, send it. Fundraisers that deliver on their promises convert one-time donors into lifelong supporters. Those that don't lose the community's goodwill for years.
Use secure, reputable tools
Money should flow through a trusted, secure payment system — payments processed safely, funds going to a verified account. That's not just convenience; it's a trust signal to every supporter. Mentioning secure payments on your page reassures people before they give.
Handle problems openly
If a voucher expires, a product is late, or a refund is needed, deal with it quickly and publicly. The way you handle mistakes says more about your trustworthiness than the way you handle successes.
Say thank you properly
Thank supporters by name where appropriate, share the outcome they made possible, and show the difference their gift made. Gratitude closes the loop — it tells supporters their trust was well placed.
Trust compounds. Every transparent update, every honest conversation, every delivered promise makes the next campaign easier. Fundraising isn't just about raising money — it's about building the relationship that makes raising money possible.
