How Fundraisers Can Tell Their Story to Increase Donations

· Generosity Team

A compelling story can double a fundraiser's results. Here's how to tell yours — and why the AI tools on Generosity make it easier than ever.

Facts inform. Stories move. And when it comes to fundraising, people give with their hearts first — then rationalise with their heads.

The fundraisers that fly past their goals are almost always the ones that tell a story people can feel. Here's how to tell yours.

Start with who, not what

"We're raising $5,000" is a fact. "We're raising $5,000 so 28 Year 8 students can go on camp" is a story. Name the people, describe the outcome, and give the numbers a human face. Who benefits? What will their life look like once the goal is reached?

Show, don't tell

Instead of "the team needs new kit", try "the team has been playing in mismatched hand-me-downs for three seasons, and the kids are sick of being laughed at by opponents." Specific details are what make a story real. Photos help enormously — a picture of the actual kids, team or hall makes it impossible to scroll past.

Structure it simply

Every good fundraiser story has three beats:

  1. The situation. Where we are and why this matters.
  2. The struggle. The challenge — an aging hall, a cancelled trip, a family in crisis.
  3. The solution. How the fundraiser changes things, and how they can be part of it.

Update the story as you go

A story isn't a one-time post. Share the journey: the first donation, the halfway mark, the moment the goal was hit. Each update is a new chapter that gives people a fresh reason to care — and a fresh reason to give.

Let AI help you start

Not everyone is a writer, and that's okay. Generosity includes AI tools that can help you turn your notes and details into a well-structured story for your page. Start with your rough thoughts, let the AI shape them, then read it through and make it sound like you. The best stories are honest — AI can help with the words, but the heart has to be yours.

End with a clear invitation

Never end a story without telling people what to do next: donate, buy a voucher, or share the page. One clear ask beats three vague ones.

Your community wants to hear your story. Give it to them — and watch what happens.
